Intel is gearing up to launch what may be its most important product since the Pentium processor: The Atom CPU targets key growth markets and could ship hundreds of millions units within a few years.
Price has been a key feature of Atom, previously code-named Silverthorne, since the very first time Intel talked about this product. Intel itself stated that the production cost of the tiny chip may be close to that of a 286 CPU, allowing the company to sell the processor for a low price to open a new market of Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) and Nettop computers with prices well below the $200 range.

ASUS is going to expand their ultra-portable Eee PC system lineup in the near future by adding a new model with 8.9-inch display and starting to ship systems with Microsoft Windows OS pre-installed. In April the company should start shipping their new 8.9-inch screen model (1024×600 pixel screen resolution) of the Eee PC. It will be available as a Windows XP version with an 8 GB SSD and 1 GB of main memory as well as Linux versions that include 12 or 20 GB of memory. It will be priced at $499. And In May 2008 Eee PC should start using Intel Atom (Diamondville) processors.

At CeBIT, Clevo unveiled a sub-notebook called TN70M. It’s based on the Intel Atom platform. The 990g sub-notebook packs in a hyperthreaded Silverthorne 1.6GHz processor that runs off a 533MHz front-side bus, it has a 7in touchscreen WSVGA (1.024 x 600) display. Storage is catered for by a 1.8in drive and external wireless connectivity will range from traditional WiFi through to WiMAX.
